Tlos and Mythos

Bellerophontes rides his winged horse, Pegasus in the land of The Ancient City-Tlos…

Before he became Bellerophontes he was Hipponoes, son of the King Glaukos. Hipponoes killed his brother, Belleos in a hunting party and he was dismissed by his father. From this time forth his name was Bellerophontes, the man who ate Belleos.

After the unfortunate event Bellerophontes left his town, passed the Aegean Sea and started a new life in Anatolia. He started to work for the King Proitos as a servant.

Wife of The King Proitos fell in love with Bellerophontes and tried to seduce him. But our noble and handsome Bellerophontes rejected the Queen’s unmoral offer.
The Queen who felt humiliated decided to take revenge from Bellerophontes. She wrote a letter, gave it to our Hero and commanded him to give the letter to her father.

Bellerophontes departed, arrived to Xhantos and gave the letter to Queen's father who is the King of Xhantos.
The King hosted him 9 days, at 10th day he opened the letter and read it.

In the letter King's daughter said:

-Father, Bellerophontes, the man who ate Belleos raped me. Kill him, destroy him

Smart king did not want to kill Bellerophontes immidiately.

He gave him a difficult mission, sent him to kill Chimera, the fire-breathing creature. Its body was composed of three animals: snake tail, lion head and goat body.

Bellerophontes first went to the oracle, Ploydeus to take his advices. Ploydeus told him to kill the creature he should capture winged horse, Pegasus.

He tried to catch Pegasus time after time but he failed at every attempt. He was praising Athens the Goddess to help him. One night, while he was sleeping, the Goddess visited him in his dream. When she saw Bellerophontes, was smitten with and decided to help him.

.... Wake up Bellerophontes wake up, your Goddess is calling you. To capture the winged-horse I brought this bridle, with it the wild animal will become tame and you'll ride it. But before, sacrifice a black taurus for your goddess.

With the help of the goddess Bellerophontes captured the winged horse and departed to catch the fire-breathing creature. An uphill battle started between Chimera and Bellerophontes; but he killed the monster with his spear.

But blazing tongue of Chimera stayed on the earth. The Bellerophontes returned to the king's landing, Xhantos. The King sent him to battle the Amazons. Again, he completed the mission with success.

After all, the king believed he has the seed of the gods, he was the undefeated. Bellerophontes married with younger daughter of King of Xhantos.

Throughout the centuries, human nature has never been changed. Pride, self-admiration and excessive ambition, those are the enemies of a human soul.

Those prepared the end of Bellerophontes.

Bellerophontes considered himself as a god after his victories and tried to reach Olympos Mountain. The father of all gods and men, Zeus was annoyed by this arrogance. Zeus sent a little horsefly. This, tiny creature bited Pegasus. The bitten Pegasus threw Bellerophontes from his back.

Bellerophontes fell on earth where he belonged to and became a cripple. Bellerophontes the fallen hero wandered around and died alone.

If you would like to see the lands of this mythological story, visit Yanartaş/Antalya. I haven't been in Yanartaş but I have visited  Tlos, the ancient city where Bellerophontes and his winged flying horse Pegasus lived.  I believe you’ll be amazed by this ancient city.
